from reading the magazine '3d world' and now seem to have 3 issues of em so far. The magazine has many issues in the world of the 3d industry, it has many reviews of animators and films they have done etc. It explain the processes they went thru to create their films. I have found a website which achives various animated short films from people interviewed in 3d world.

There are lots of examples of how short films have intregrated many different process together, and ive found them quite inspiring. As this is the definate path im going for. The website has a lot of independant amators etc. The film 'Help Me!
by Isaak Fernandez Rodriguez'(2007) is especially a nice peice, using various bits of sofware, for the compositing, but mainly done in maya.
